Disability and neurodiversity support

Assistive Equipment at all libraries

A range of equipment can be borrowed from the Service Desks at each library or can be found in the open study area at designated spaces, or in the Assistive Technology Rooms at Northampton Square.

High visibility keyboard Low vision. Larger letters with enhanced contrast. Installed at designated pc
LED natural light lamp Low vision. Adjustable lighting. Ask at Service desk
Sound isolating headphones Noise isolating headphones physically block ambient noise with their seal against your ear. Can help minimize distraction. Ask at Service desk
Reading rulers Acetate overlays in a range of colours. Supports visual stress sufferers, combining page tinting with tracking support. Grey, orange, sky (blue) and yellow available. Ask at Service desk

Scanners

Flatbed scanners for use with OCR scanning package ABBYY Finereader.


Desktop magnifiers

Desktop magnifiers for viewing, magnifying and adjusting background and contrast of print items are available at:

Northampton Square Library: Vocatex Read Aloud Magnifier. Magnify texts up to 90x. The equipment includes Read Aloud and change text and background colour features. Located in the Assistive Technology Centre.

Law Library College Building: Onyx desktop magnifier. Magnifies up to 85x. Please ask staff if you would like to use the equipment.

Law Library Gray's Inn Place: Turn right at the top of the stairs. The remote control and instructions can be borrowed from the desk.

Ergonomic Furniture

Northampton Square Assistive Technology Centre: Height adjustable tables through out (one extends to standing height) and ergonomic chairs (mix of mid back and head and neck support). 

Cass: Manually height adjustable table in journals area.

Law Grays Inn Place: There are two height adjustable tables at basement level. Please ask staff for more details.


 

Additional Equipment at Northampton Square Library

A range of assistive equipment is available in the Assistive Technology Rooms or can be borrowed from the Level 2 Service Desk at Northampton Square Library.

Keyboards

BigKeys keyboard
For anyone who needs large keys in order to locate and operate the keys.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

High visibility keyboards

A range of high visibility keyboards, including black text on yellow keys can be found in the Assistive Technology Centre.

Ergonomic Keyboard

Encourages natural wrist and arm alignment so you can work without discomfort.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Mice and touchpads

Trackball mouse
Reduces unnecessary wrist movements and supports the natural shape of the user's hand.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Ergonomic mouse
Buttons are flipped sideways to avoid forearm twisting and for better comfort.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Left-handed vertical ergonomic mouse
Buttons are flipped sideways to avoid forearm twisting and for better comfort. For left-handed users.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Touchpad
Makes it easier to control your computer. Glide finger over the surface point, then tap on the pad or press on the buttons to click. Activate vertical scroll by gliding finger along the right edge of the touchpad.

Digital Voice Recorders

Digital Voice recorders can be arranged for students who are referred for this service by the Disability Support and Neurodiversity Support departments. 4 Olympus 3500 model and 1 Olympus DM5 model with voice guidance.

Headphones

Noise cancelling headphones

Actively neutralises steady, low-frequency noise.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Headsets with microphones

Includes microphone for use with Dragon Professional dictation software or Microsoft dictation.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

USB desktop microphone

Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Rests, slopes and stands

Gel wrist rest

Encourages correct wrist alignment during keyboard use. Allows hands to hover with support above the keyboard to give improved comfort.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Posturite slope

Helps prevent and relieve aches and pains including headaches, neck and back pain, shoulder fatigue and eye strain, thereby improving work efficiency. Magnet enables the user to hold papers at the optimal position for correct posture whilst writing.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Posturite book ledger

To be used with the Posturite board SEE ABOVE. Hooks onto the board providing a half inch lip to support heavier books or files. This ledger can be positioned anywhere and can also create a larger work surface with a partial overhang when required.

Document stand

Document stands are available at each study space in the Assistive Technology Centre.

Belkin portable iPad stand

Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Booklift Copyholder

  • Specially designed for textbooks, reference manuals and daily planners
  • Adjustable clips hold pages open for comfortable viewing and typing
  • Clips into three-ring and A4 binder
  • Nine height adjustments
