Online Services

We continue to offer extensive online services and you can find a huge range of online resources via CityLibrary Search. You can chat to us online Monday-Friday, 9am-8pm, send us an enquiry, or check out our FAQs via 'Ask Us'.

We continue to run online workshops on a range of topics, or if you need more specialist/subject based help you can book an online meeting with a librarian via our appointments page.

Borrowing Books

Items from all our libraries are available to request and collect. It is not possible to browse or retrieve items from the shelves, items must be requested via CityLibrary Search and can be collected from the Northampton Square Library or the Business Library. The Law Library remains closed, but Law books can be requested for collection from the Northampton Square Library.

We will email you when your requested items are ready to collect. You have 7 days to collect your items. Book collection opening hours are currently:

  • Northampton Square Library - Monday-Friday, 09:00-21:00 & Saturday-Sunday, 12:00-18:00
  • Business Library - Monday-Friday, 09:00-21:00

Things to remember:

  • Unless you have also pre-booked a study space (see below for details), you will not be permitted to stay in the library after collecting your books.
  • We are unable to post requested items - only in-person collection is available.
  • You will need your City ID card.  Arrangements are in place for new students to collect cards and returning students to obtain new ID cards.
  • A maximum of 10 requests is permitted on your library account at any time.

Study Spaces

Northampton Square Library & Business Library

We have a limited number of computer desks and study spaces available to City students at the Northampton Square and Business Libraries. To use these study spaces you must book ahead. Face coverings must be worn at all times (unless exempt).

As we have limited numbers of desks and PCs available, it is important to book ahead. At present you can make 5 bookings per week for a maximum of 3 hours in any category. This is to ensure the maximum number of students have access to available spaces in a safe, socially distanced way.

The IT Service Desk in the library will remain closed for the foreseeable future, any IT enquiries will continue to be responded to remotely via Service Now.

WiFi is available via the eduroam network. Printing and photocopying is available in both libraries.

Returning Books

You can return library items via our Book Return Boxes, which are located as follows;

  • Northampton Square -
    • on the 1st floor walkway of University Building
    • outside the main entrance to the University Building
    • inside the entrance to the library
  • Business Library -
    • on the ground floor of the building

Please note: due to the need to quarantine returned items for 72 hours on arrival, these items will remain on your library account for up to a week after they are returned. No overdue charges will be incurred during this period. If you are concerned about any titles remaining on your library account after this period, please contact us.

Keeping our libraries, our users and our staff safe

Please remember to maintain social distancing at all times.

Face coverings must be worn at all times (unless exempt) - even when seated.

Hand sanitiser and cleaning materials will be provided for students to wipe surfaces, keyboards and equipment before use.

Further guidance can be found on the student hub.
