Accessibility

Information on how the Library supports accessibility and inclusivity.

Assistive equipment

A range of equipment can be borrowed from the Help Desks at each library. You can also find furniture and equipment in the Assistive Technology Spaces at Northampton Square and Law.

Equipment at all Libraries

Equipment Description Location
High visibility keyboard A standard size keyboard with larger letters with enhanced contrast. Installed at designated pc. Ask at Library Help Desk.
LED natural light lamp Portable, adjustable lighting. Borrow from Library Help Desk. Also Installed at designated spaces.
Sound isolating headphones Noise isolating headphones physically block ambient noise with their seal against your ear. Can help minimize distraction. Borrow from Library Help Desk.
Reading rulers and overlays Acetate overlays in a range of colours. Supports visual stress sufferers, combining page tinting with tracking support. Grey, orange, sky (blue) and yellow available. Borrow from Library Help Desk.

Scanners

Flatbed scanner

A Plustek OpticBook 4800 flatbed scanner is available in Northampton Square Library ATR1 and ATR2. Use the scanner with the ABBYY FineReader program to create searchable PDFs or Word documents from print materials.

The scanner has a book-edge design which eliminates the book spine shadow and text distortion associated with books scanned on flatbeds and copiers.


Overhead scanner

PEARL Scanner a portable overhead scanner which can be borrowed from the Level 2 Help Desk. The scanner can be used in the NSQ Assistive Technology Centre pcs with OpenBook software.

Overhead scanner

CZUR ET16 Plus. There is an overhead scanner in the Assistive Technology Room with Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

The scanner can be operated by hand or via a foot pedal.

Equipment at Northampton Square Library

Samson Go USB Microphone

  • A portable uni-directional and omni-directional microphone.
  • Connects to Pc or Mac using a USB to mini-USB connector.
  • Suitable for use with transcription tools such as Caption.ed.
  • Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk. Day loan.

Noise cancelling headphones

Actively neutralises steady, low-frequency noise.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Headsets with microphones

Includes microphone for use with Dragon Professional dictation software or Microsoft dictation.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


USB desktop microphone

Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Desktop magnifiers

Desktop magnifier for viewing, magnifying and adjusting background and contrast of print items are available at:

Law Library: Onyx desktop magnifier. Magnifies up to 85x. Available in the Assistive Technology Room.


Portable magnifier

RUBY portable magnifier. Available to be borrowed from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Monitor and adaptors

A 27" monitor with an AD adaptor ring (including HDMI and USB-C) is available at Northampton Square Library. Assistive Technology Centre, drop in area. You can connect your own laptop or device to view it on a larger screen.

Rests, slopes and stands

Posturite slope

Helps prevent and relieve aches and pains including headaches, neck and back pain, shoulder fatigue and eye strain, thereby improving work efficiency. Magnet enables the user to hold papers at the optimal position for correct posture whilst writing.
Available in the Assistive Technology centre.


Posturite book ledger

To be used with the Posturite board above. Hooks onto the board providing a half inch lip to support heavier books or files. This ledger can be positioned anywhere and can also create a larger work surface with a partial overhang when required.

Available in the Assistive Technology centre.


Document stands

Document stands are available at each study space in the Assistive Technology Centre.


Belkin portable iPad stand

Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Booklift Copyholder

  • Specially designed for textbooks, reference manuals and daily planners
  • Adjustable clips hold pages open for comfortable viewing and typing
  • Clips into three-ring and A4 binder
  • Nine height adjustments

Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Gel wrist rest

Encourages correct wrist alignment during keyboard use. Allows hands to hover with support above the keyboard to give improved comfort.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.

Trackball mouse

Reduces unnecessary wrist movements and supports the natural shape of the user's hand.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Ergonomic mouse

Buttons are flipped sideways to avoid forearm twisting and for better comfort.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Left-handed vertical ergonomic mouse

Buttons are flipped sideways to avoid forearm twisting and for better comfort. For left-handed users.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


Touchpad

Makes it easier to control your computer. Glide finger over the surface point, then tap on the pad or press on the buttons to click. Activate vertical scroll by gliding finger along the right edge of the touchpad.

BigKeys keyboard

For anyone who needs large keys in order to locate and operate the keys.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.


High visibility keyboards

A range of high visibility keyboards, including black text on yellow keys can be found in the Assistive Technology Centre.


Ergonomic Keyboard

Encourages natural wrist and arm alignment so you can work without discomfort.
Can be borrowed by all users from the Level 2 Help Desk.
