Resources and Best Practices for creating LibGuides at City St George's

Reusing content

When adding new boxes to your library guide, you don't always have to start from scratch. You could reuse an existing box, either from one of your own guides, or from other guides at City. You have two options to reuse the content:

Mapping a box: this adds a box to your guide that is linked to the original box. Any changes and updates to the original will automatically update any mapped version of the box.

If you see the share symbol, be careful - it means that other boxes are mapped to this one and you need to contact the guide owner of those boxes before you delete it.

Copying a box: this creates an independent version of the original box. If you edit the content of the box on your own guide, it will not affect the box you copied.

How to map a box

First of all, find the guide that include the box you wish to map to, and make a note of the title of the box.

  • On your guide, click on Add Box, then select the Reuse Existing Box tab.
  • Select the guide from the drop down menu, and the Box.
  • You can assign a new name if you with to, or keep the original box name.
  • Then save.  On the mapped box you will see the recycle icon next to the title, and a note reminding you that the edit mode is disabled for mapped boxes.

To add a mapped box in libguide, select Reuse existing box tab, the guide were the box is, and the name of the original

Mapping Vs Copying

If you are reusing content / boxes / pages, remember that mapping is much better than copying. It is easier to keep consistency and to update the content of your guides. You just have to edit the original and everything else will be automatically updated.  It saves you time and effort and avoids creating duplicate assets.

If you don't have to make any changes to the content of the box or page, make sure you select the mapping option.
