LibGuides at City St George's

Resources and Best Practices for creating LibGuides at City St George's

Adding boxes

  • Each box should cover one main idea to allow for easy page scanning. Your reader will see each box as a section with a heading.
  • Put the most important information in the box at the top of the page.
  • Do not describe what is inside the guide. This information displays in the side navigation.
  • Keep box titles short, clear and meaningful. They should highlight the importance of the content to the reader.
  • Re-use boxes wherever possible.

Adding assets

The Asset Manager function makes it easier to reuse content from your own and other peoples' guides. Before adding any links, widgets or images, you should always check if the link already exists before creating a new one. This avoids duplication and will make updating the guides and gathering statistics much easier for all types of content.

  • Always reuse resource links from the A-Z Guide if you're linking to something like a database. This means that if the URL changes, your guide will be updated as soon as the original link is changed.
  • Reuse content from within LibGuides. Reusing linked boxes means that we only have to update one box in order to keep many guides up-to-date.
  • Link out to content wherever you mention it.  For instance, link out if you refer to a database, another webpage, or even in a comment like "There are plenty of business law e-books available at CityLibrary". However, avoid duplicating links on a page.

Preview your guide

Only by viewing your guide outside of Edit Mode will you see what it really looks like. You can set your guide to Private to be able to preview content which has not been submitted for review.

Adding pages

You may add new pages but please consider the following:

  • Try to limit the number of pages in a single guide so the navigation is not overwhelming
  • Keep page names short
  • Add the most important information to the first page of your guide (check your guide's statistics - most users do not look beyond the first page)
  • Subpages may be used, but should be as simple as possible with meaningful labels.
